George Don

News

Though it is 12 years since our First World War research group published the award-winning A Village Remembers, telling the lives and war stories of the 27 men on Strathblane War Memorial, information continues to appear. In June a chance encounter led to a contact with the descendants of John Dillon of the Royal Army Medical Corps, the only Roman Catholic on the memorial. As a result we have produced a detailed story about John's life and war service, complete with photographs.

Now, thanks to another chance encounter, we have been able to add several photographs to the story of 35-year old George Don, father of two and a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery, including a splendid portrait of him on horseback. George's grandson, Michael Frank of Alexandria, Virginia, contacted Strathblane Heritage after his niece walked the West Highland Way and became aware of our work when she visited Strathblane War Memorial.
