The latest addition to our Reminiscences section is a fascinating photo essay about a chapter of Glasgow’s working class history that risked being lost forever. The Fellowship Camping Association at Carbeth was an offshoot of the socialist Clarion Cycling movement. For four decades, from 1926 onwards, throughout the Great Depression and the Second World War, scores of Glasgow families joined an encampment at Carbeth at weekends and during the summer holidays. Families who could never have afforded summer holidays were able to escape cramped tenements and the city’s industrial grime and share fun and friendship in one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland. For many of these youngsters, it was a life-changing experience.

Our piece draws on the memories of two of the association’s veterans and a remarkable annotated photograph album that traces its history from the beginning.
